I was thinking about camping the other day. Not doing it, obviously. Just thinking about it. Because that’s really the sweet spot for camping—right before you actually go.
People say camping is about “getting back to nature.” Which is interesting, because nature spent millions of years trying to kill us, and now we’re like, “You know what would be fun? Let’s go back.”
Anyway, if you’re going to ignore all of human progress for a weekend, you’re going to need some essentials.
The Tent
The tent is important because it creates the illusion that you are indoors, even though you are very much outdoors.
You zip it up, and suddenly you’re like, “Ah yes, I am safe now,” as if the thin layer of fabric is going to stop anything with teeth or opinions.
Also, putting up a tent is a nice group activity, in the sense that it slowly reveals which of your friends you will no longer be speaking to.
Food
Camping food is fascinating. At home, you have access to a full kitchen, and you’re like, “Eh, I’ll just order something.”
But out in the woods, with limited supplies and questionable fire control, suddenly you’re a chef. You’re like, “Tonight, I will prepare… a hot dog.”
And it’s the best hot dog you’ve ever had, mostly because you’re hungry and a little afraid.
The Campfire
The campfire is where everyone gathers to stare at flames like we just discovered them.
You poke it with a stick. Everyone pokes it with a stick. Nobody knows why, but it feels important.
At some point, someone tells a story that starts with, “This actually happened to my cousin,” which is how you know it did not happen to their cousin.
The Maglite Flashlight
Now, this is where things get serious.
Because during the day, camping is just a bad picnic. But at night, it becomes a situation.
Everything changes. The same woods that looked peaceful suddenly feel like they’re… watching you. Which is ridiculous, of course. Trees don’t watch you.
It’s the other stuff.
That’s when you reach for a Maglite flashlight. Not one of those tiny little keychain lights that barely illuminates your own disappointment. I’m talking about a real flashlight. The kind you hold and think, “Alright, I’ve got a chance now.”
You shine it into the darkness, and suddenly you can see… more darkness. But at least now it’s organized.
And there’s something comforting about it. You hear a noise, you point the beam, and for a brief moment you feel like you’re in control. Like, “Go ahead, forest. Try something. I’ve got… this flashlight.”
Also, it’s useful for finding things you dropped, which you will. Repeatedly. Usually right after saying, “I’ll just set this here so I don’t lose it.”
Sleeping
Sleeping while camping is an interesting concept.
At home, you need complete silence, a perfect pillow, and the exact right temperature. Out here, you’re on the ground, inside a bag, listening to every sound ever made.
A twig snaps, and you’re awake immediately. Wide awake. Never been more awake.
You’re lying there thinking, “That’s probably nothing.” And then, “But what if it’s… something?”
This is also where the Maglite comes back. You turn it on, shine it around, and confirm that yes—there is still a lot of outside happening.
The Morning
Morning arrives, and you feel like you’ve survived something. Not necessarily slept, but survived.
Everything smells like smoke. Your back hurts. Your coffee tastes incredible, mainly because it’s warm and you’re still alive.
And someone always says, “We should do this more often.”
Which is a bold statement, considering what just happened.
Final Thoughts
Camping is a strange hobby. You leave your comfortable home, go into the wilderness, and spend a few days pretending this is better.
But there is something about it. The quiet, the fire, the fresh air, and the mild, constant sense of danger.
And if you’re going to do it, you might as well bring a Maglite flashlight.
Because when you’re out there in the dark, hearing things you can’t explain, it’s nice to have something solid in your hand that says, “Well… at least I can see what gets me.”
And honestly, that’s all you can really ask for.
