Learn moreWhy a Maglite MUST Be a Part of Your EDC
Key’s, phone, wallet, CCW, and a flashlight? That’s my typical checklist walking out the door, and the one I use the most, besides my phone, is the compact flashlight. I believe there are numerous reasons why a compact flashlight like the MAG-TAC LED Crowned Bezel should find a new home in your pocket every time you step out the door, not to mention on your nightstand. Instead of dragging on with reason after reason, I’ve compiled my top three, so let’s get started! Reason #1: It Helps You See in the Dark Duh! That’s why flashlights were invented, smart guy on the internet. Okay, hear me out, though. How often have you dropped something and struggled to find it or walked up to the door kicking yourself because you forgot to turn the porch lights on before you left? And now you’re struggling to find the right key or the keyhole. Just me? No, I didn’t think so! As a hunter, a hunting flashlight is an invaluable tool I always have in a bag or close by. I use them to follow blood trails, find my way to the spot I’m hunting that morning, and find my way back to my vehicle at night. Speaking of vehicles, even during the day, I often need a flashlight to see what’s under the hood while working on it. From changing the oil to simple repairs, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve used a Maglite while pretending to be a mechanic. One night, I had to rescue my parents because the battery in their new car decided to die. Having a Maglite that night made replacing the car battery so much less of a struggle. While in a pinch, I’ve used the “flashlight” on my phone, let’s be honest, the light doesn’t make seeing in the dark much easier. Even though this is reason enough to ensure you have a Maglite with you 24/7, let’s move on to another convincing argument. Reason #2: It Will Keep You Safer When I think of safety, I rarely initially think of a flashlight. Maybe it’s my training in the coal mining industry, but I always think of a hard hat and safety vest first. However, at night, on the roadside, someone will first notice a light, especially a bright or uniquely colored light. Using the flashlight to illuminate yourself, the tire you’re changing, or your vehicle, in general, will help alert other drivers to slow down or at least move over into the next lane so you have a little room to do what needs to be done. DO NOT, and I repeat, do not shine the light at the oncoming vehicles; that is a recipe for disaster. Use it only to make you and your vehicle more visible. Reason #3: It Can Help You Get Out of a Dangerous Situation I was shocked when I heard Jocko Willink answer, “What would you do in a street fight?” As a former Navy SEAL, BJJ Black Belt, and a big guy in general, he said, “Run, I would run away.” Then he explained there’s no reason to expose himself to an unnecessary risk of injury or death. He has nothing to prove by staying and fighting; we don’t either. This is why it’s most often better to pull out the Maglite and use it to temporarily blind someone by shining it in their eyes while you get away. Not to mention, the legal ramifications of sending a few 45 ACP rounds in someone's direction versus pointing a bright light at them are not comparable. You can use several techniques to help disorient the would-be bad guy. The first is quickly turning the Maglite on and off, mimicking a strobe light, or turning on the strobe setting. Or you can simply turn it on and point it at their face as you find a safer place. I don’t recommend turning the flashlight on, dropping it, and running away. People always try this in the movies, and it rarely turns out well for them. And I seriously doubt it will work in the real world unless you’re a track star. Choosing Which Maglite to Carry So now you’re convinced you should be carrying a Maglite, but there are so many options; how do you choose which one to carry? Start by deciding how you plan to carry it. If you’re going to stuff it in your pocket, I recommend a compact flashlight. I would go with a mid-sized light if you carry it on your belt or in a purse or bag. I gravitate towards LED lights because they’re brighter and last longer but more expensive. So, if it’s not in your budget, an incandescent light is still a good option. I’ve bought multiple styles and sizes throughout the years to meet my needs in that season, so don’t feel like you have to rush out and buy a bunch of flashlights all at once. Some of my grandpa’s old Maglites are still being used around the farm, so I can speak from experience when I say these flashlights are built tough. This is one last reason why a Maglite should be a standard part of your EDC. Author: Samuel Jacobs of ammo.com
Learn moreFor the Love of Overlanding
Lane Butz has a busy and complicated life. He is an in-demand professional who manages online presence, e-commerce, and social media for clients in different industries. Many of his clients are household names, and among his recent efforts is work that he did for the E3 Associations. Working with E3 Offroad and Overland was especially easy for him because he is an active offroad enthusiast and often lives the overland lifestyle. But this wasn’t always the case; getting offroad and overlanding was an accident, albeit a happy one.“To be honest with you,” said Butz. “I bought a truck that had a power wagon on accident. I had another pickup, and I like to do offroading stuff with that one. Then when I got this other truck, it had many features that started me YouTubing more about the truck, which got me into overlanding and lined up with a group of guys you might have heard of called E3 Overlanding. I signed up with them, and then it took off from there. I got into it and built up a truck that I can live in on the road if I want to, work in, and, uh, basically carry-on life.” His overlanding rig is a 2020 Ram 2500 PowerWagon, outfitted with a 6.4 Hemi, full-lockers front and back, electronic disconnectable sway bar, 35-inch tires, 4-inch lift (standard on a PowerWagon), Goal-Zero Power systems and Solar, Roofnest Condor XL Rooftop Tent, Yakima Road Shower, Bedslider, Dometic 75 quart fridge, KC fog lights and chase lights, and more. “I recently added StarLink, and now I can work from anywhere,” Butz said. “It’s a total game changer.” To hear Butz tell his story, it’s clear that the resources available through E3 Offroad and Overland were crucial to his successful lifestyle adaptation. “E3 has been very educational for me. For someone who gets into it, I've only been into this for a couple of years, so for someone just getting into it, E3 is a great opportunity to learn how to do much stuff. I've done offroading, but not to the point where you will stay out for weeks. It’s so important to know what to do with everything from what tires to get, how to do this, how to keep your food the longest time, toiletries, etc.” said Butz. “And there are just so many things to do overland that you might overlook your first trip out. You don't want to get out there in the middle of nowhere and be unprepared. E3 got me ready to go and helped me avoid rookie mistakes.” According to Butz, one of the most critical pieces of equipment to have is good portable lighting sources of different kinds for alternative missions. Fortunately for Lane, he has a long and close relationship with one of the most trusted brands in that arena, MAGLITE®. “I do use a lot of Maglite products. I have a large ML 300L 4D that will last a very long time on one set of batteries. I believe it is around two weeks of continual use in Eco Mode. It throws more than 1,000 lumens and can put light on something up to a quarter of a mile away. Useful when you are out in the hinterland. And it has an emergency signaling mode if you need help,” Butz said. “I also use the Spectrum Series lights, mostly red and green. The red light is great for night vision and doesn’t attract mosquitoes. I have on my truck some lights that I built around it that light up the outside of my truck in red.” Butz said he also thinks the red light keeps you a little safer. “There are times when you don't want to advertise. You are out alone in the middle of nowhere in a hundred-thousand-dollar rig. It's nice to use a little bit of low light and enough for me to see just fine. I can cook with the red light and everything else. It's just a little security built into not having too much light.” Lane was introduced to the owners of MAGLITE® and began working for the company, mostly centered around various forms of digital marketing. He made it clear that Maglite is a family affair. “The company’s founder, Tony Maglica, who is in his nineties, is still running the show, which impressed me,” Butz said. “His two sons, John and Tony Jr. are intimately involved with the day-to-day as well, so you have the family-owned qualities as with the small company, but in a globally recognized brand. It made it an enjoyable place to work.” Butz has been helping his wife with her cancer battle, which has limited his adventures recently. However, he still occasionally gets out on the road and finds it a soothing experience and respite from what his wife and he are going through together. “Getting out on the trails for me, it's a great way to center; life is stressful with stuff going on. We are dealing with cancer in our family.” Butz said. “When I get an opportunity to get away for a few days, refocus, you know, it's nice. And I can do that in a pristine setting, right? I'm up in the middle of a mountain with no one. So, for me, it's just a great way to relax. It's peaceful; it’s beautiful. I can go to places other people can't, and I love it, you know?”
Learn moreFive Things to Look for in a Tactical Flashlight
As a 40-year law enforcement veteran, I’ve worked with a very wide range of police flashlights over the years. Many of them were the Maglite brand. As a patrol officer, investigator, SWAT team, member, and law enforcement trainer, I think I may have a decent perspective of what works best in terms of the handheld “tactical” flashlights. A handheld tactical light can be used as a weapon light, area light for searching, or general utility. Hopefully, some of what I consider to be important basic requirements will prove helpful to you in your search for this very important piece of equipment. The lumen output should not be overpowering when the light is used at close range. 1000 lumens should be the maximum—lights with a lumen output of around 500 lumens are ideal. Dimming the light immediately after turning it on should not be a regular pattern of use. A multi-role tactical should be a mid-sized light with good balance and easily adapted to various operating holds and grip styles. An overall length of 5 to 6 inches is great as a belt or pocket carried light. Only 3-4 modes at most should be available, and those limited modes should be easily accessible and simple to use. A low setting must be available as a momentary, constant-on, and—depending on the max lumen output. While a strobe setting can be useful—especially for law enforcement use—the lack of one is not a deal breaker for civilian users. A good handheld tactical light should be operated via a tail-cap switch that can be easily operated with just the thumb of one hand. A tail-cap switch that features quiet operation is helpful for room and area searches. NEVER select a light that you are planning on staking your life on from a display of “un-brand” lights in the checkout line of your local big-box store. In closing, don’t scrimp on your tactical light. There is no room for a junk light in your pocket or on your belt, any more than there is a place for a junk gun, holster, or knife because it just may be called on to save your life.
