So before the next major storm arrives, here are some practical DIY projects that can help get your home ready.

DIY #1: Clean Your Gutters

We're starting with everybody's favorite Saturday activity.

Gutters.

Nobody has ever woken up excited to clean gutters.

Nobody's wife has ever said:

"Great news. We don't have plans today. You can spend the afternoon pulling wet leaves off the roof."

But gutters have one job: move rainwater away from your house.

When they're clogged with leaves, pine needles, dirt, and whatever else has established a civilization up there, water can overflow where you don't want it.

Before heavy rain arrives, inspect accessible gutters and downspouts and remove obvious debris. Make sure downspouts are firmly attached and directing water away from the foundation.

While you're working, check for loose sections, obvious leaks, sagging areas, or connections that have separated.

And use appropriate ladder safety. If a section can't be reached safely, that's where DIY ends and calling somebody with the proper equipment begins.

Check drainage areas for leaves, dirt, mulch, or other debris that could prevent water from moving freely.

If you have drainage channels, catch basins, or yard drains, make sure they're clear and functioning as intended.

After a normal rain, take another walk around the property.

Look for standing water.

That can show you drainage problems much better than standing outside on a sunny afternoon trying to imagine where water might go.

Water will show you.

Water enjoys pointing out mistakes.

DIY #4: Weatherproof Doors and Windows

Wind-driven rain is very good at finding small openings.

It's basically rain with ambition.

Inspect the seals around exterior windows and doors. Look for deteriorated caulk, cracked sealant, damaged weather stripping, and visible gaps.

Some minor sealing projects may be appropriate DIY jobs using exterior-rated products intended for your particular window, door, siding, or building material.

The key phrase there is your particular material.

Don't just find a mysterious tube in the garage and start applying it to the house.

That's how you eventually end up at the hardware store holding a chunk of something and asking an employee:

"Do you know what this used to be?"

Use a flashlight to inspect corners, frames, thresholds, and other areas where daylight or interior lighting doesn't provide a clear view.

Depending on your home and local conditions, that might include appropriate flood barriers, sandbags or approved alternatives, plastic sheeting for suitable applications, buckets, a wet/dry vacuum where safe and appropriate, work gloves, waterproof boots, and basic cleanup supplies.

Store everything together somewhere accessible.

Not "somewhere in the garage."

That's not a location.

That's a general region.

Put the supplies in a clearly marked container so anyone in the household can find them quickly.

Place dependable flashlights in predictable locations throughout your home.

Water, food, medications, pet supplies, and other necessities should also be part of your broader emergency plan.

Label the container.

Put it somewhere accessible.

Congratulations.

You have now become more organized than approximately 90% of garages.

Don't get carried away.

DIY #10: Build a Storm Kit for Your Car

Your house isn't the only place that needs preparation.

Put together a basic vehicle emergency kit for heavy rain and severe weather.

Keep a compact flashlight, phone charging equipment, basic first-aid supplies, drinking water, reflective emergency equipment, gloves, and other regionally appropriate supplies in your vehicle.
